When Everyone Can Write With AI, Do You Still Need a Writer?

Key Takeaways

  • Content Writer was one of Malaysia’s top five emerging jobs in LinkedIn-derived 2019 labour reporting.
  • In August 2026, JobStreet shows 1,366 Content Writer results nationwide, but many are hybrid content, brand and marketing positions.
  • In Kuala Lumpur alone, JobStreet shows 533 Content Writer results versus 1,974 Marketing Executive roles.
  • Indeed now has 700+ Malaysian “AI Content” vacancies, including roles explicitly asking for AI prompting and AI-assisted writing.
  • Our experience is that AI has reduced the need for a separate generalist writer when marketing already owns the strategy, SEO and subject knowledge.

Need content? Hire a writer. That used to be the obvious answer.

Today, a company can hire an SEO executive, digital marketer or social media person to do the work of a content writer. All you need to do, is to add another line to the job description:

“Must be proficient in using AI to write, draft or plan content.”

At the simplest level, someone grabs a prompt online and opens ChatGPT. More sophisticated teams can build reusable prompts, brand instructions and automated processes around their existing workflows.

Meanwhile, actual writers are using AI too. Indeed currently carries Malaysian Content Writer vacancies that explicitly ask employees to use AI content tools to increase productivity and scale content creation.

Which creates an uncomfortable staffing question.

If your marketer already knows the customer, product, SEO strategy and campaign objective, and AI can handle much of the drafting, do you still need another employee whose main job is writing?

We have had to ask ourselves the same question because true to our name, content.com.my is a content marketing agency. Shocker we know.

But genuinely, we have to do some soul-searching as of late as some of us are a little concerned about our own career prospects, and this article itself is part of the answer.

How Important Were Content Writers Before ChatGPT?

Content writing was considered a growing Malaysian digital career before generative AI became mainstream.

In 2019, reporting based on LinkedIn’s Malaysia Emerging Jobs analysis placed Content Writer fifth among Malaysia’s top emerging jobs, alongside Data Scientist, Full Stack Engineer, Drive Test Engineer and User Experience Designer.

That feels quite different from the conversation surrounding writers today and interestingly, those jobs we listed are also scarce in 2026.

A Malaysian Content Writer vacancy from 2020 illustrates how clearly defined the role once was. The employer wanted:

  • Strong English and Bahasa Malaysia
  • Qualifications in communications
  • PR, journalism or English degrees
  • At least one year of related experience.

The advertised salary was RM2,800 to RM3,000 monthly, give or take.

The value proposition was fairly straightforward. If you could write, the company hired you to write.

ChatGPT arrived publicly in late 2022, and the economics of producing a decent first draft started changing very quickly.

How Many Content Writer Jobs Are Available in Malaysia in 2026?

Writer jobs have not disappeared, but current job boards show how broadly the word “writer” is now being stretched.

As of August 2026, JobStreet shows 1,366 Content Writer results across Malaysia. The results include positions such as Content & Brand Specialist rather than only traditional writers.

In Kuala Lumpur, JobStreet shows 533 Content Writer results.

Compare that with 1,974 Marketing Executive jobs in Kuala Lumpur on the same platform.

Broaden the search to all marketing roles in KL and JobStreet shows 4,253 vacancies.

These are job-board search counts, not official employment statistics. Searches overlap, classifications differ and results can change daily.

What they are very useful for showing is what employers now mean by content work and that definition has become much wider.

Are Companies Still Hiring People Just to Write?

Yes, but many 2026 vacancies now pair writing with marketing, SEO, brand, social media or AI responsibilities.

A current remote work Senior Copywriter and Content Strategist in KLr pays RM4,500 to RM6,000 per month and describes the position as”room to lead”, sounds quite nice!

Another remote work position in Selangor offers  RM4,500 to RM6,500 monthly who requires the writer to have a “creative spark”, good benefits though.

The last role we saw is for a part-time SEO content writer whose job description is much closer to what expected, requiring strong technical writing and using AI assisted drafts.

These are no longer jobs where somebody simply waits for a brief and returns a Word document.

The employee may be expected to understand:

  • SEO
  • Campaign planning
  • Social media
  • Video
  • Branding
  • Analytics
  • Audience behaviour
  • AI tools
  • Content strategy

Maukerja shows the same mixing of responsibilities. Its Malaysia-wide “writer” search currently returns 1,300+ results, including Copywriter, Content Editor and Digital Publishing Executive positions.

Some listings expect candidates to research search intent and competitors while writing SEO articles, landing pages, advertisements, social posts, emails and sales materials.

Honestly, it’s basically a bloated job description that has swallowed half the marketing department.

Why Can Marketing Take Over the Writer’s Job?

AI removes much of the manual production work that previously justified handing an idea to another person.

Consider the old SEO content workflow:

SEO research → brief → writer → edit → SEO revision → marketing revision → publish

Every handover introduces context loss. The writer needs to understand what the SEO specialist already understands.

Sometimes everyone spends three emails discussing one paragraph that could have been written correctly by the person who understood the subject in the first place.

With AI, the person doing SEO or marketing can often stay in control:

Research → instruct AI → edit → fact-check → publish

The person already knows the keyword, search intent, customer, product and commercial objective and AI does much of the typing.

What If Human Writers Are Using AI Anyway?

This is where the commercial argument becomes harder for generalist writers.

If a professional writer uses AI to outline, brainstorm, research, rewrite and draft, that is perfectly reasonable. But the company can use the same technology.

The writer therefore needs to contribute something beyond operating the tool.

That might be:

  • Specialist expertise in medical or fintech
  • Good editorial judgement
  • Persuasive copywriting
  • Investigative research
  • Brand storytelling

Those skills remain difficult for AI to imitate, at least for now. “Give me the keyword and I’ll write 1,500 words” is a much shakier proposition.

Writing is increasingly becoming a skill inside another profession rather than the entire profession.

Are Dedicated Content Writers Going to Disappear in Malaysia?

Probably not, but the safest place to be is no longer “just a writer.”

Specialist writers still have strong reasons to exist. Medical writing, financial and technical writing require knowledge, accuracy and judgement that are difficult to replace with a prompt.

The pressure is heavier on generalist writers producing routine blogs, landing pages and corporate content from briefs.

For them, the response is upskilling.

Learn SEO, marketing, analytics, branding, anything! Become the person who decides what should be written, not only the person who writes it.

What Should Employers Do With Dedicated Content Teams?

If you are a boss, HR or employer reading this article, please do not treat AI as an excuse to start cutting headcount immediately.

  1. Retrenchment in Malaysia is subject to employment and industrial-relations requirements.
  2. Your Writers already know your brands better than ChatGPT
  3. AI can speed up the writing process rather than replace it.

Start by asking what your writers could now do with the time AI saves.

At the end, view AI as a tedious work eliminator. What kind of work can this person do now after removing all the busy admin and tedious stuff?

Redundancy may still happen where teams were built mainly around producing high volumes of routine content. But it should come after redesigning the work, not before.

When Everyone Can Write With AI, Companies Hire for What AI Cannot Do

Our own experience has changed how we think about content hiring.

Less is more and we have admittedly, freeze hiring for new writers because we can do more with our team.

We like our team, and our juniors who write for clients have been upskilled to learn content planning, keyword research and branding.

Seniors have become better strategists, planning long-ahead and being “futureproof”.

If there’s any takeaway for writers it’s: What can you contribute beyond the draft?

And for employers: What can your writers now own beyond writing?

Being able to write is becoming the baseline but knowing what to write, why it matters and what to do with it afterwards is becoming the job.

Where do we stand? Where we always did, continuing creating quality content for our clients.

Frequently Asked Questions About Do You Still Need a Writer

Will AI replace content writers in Malaysia?

AI is unlikely to eliminate all writers. Current Malaysian vacancies suggest greater pressure on generalist roles, while specialist and hybrid positions combining writing with SEO, marketing, AI and strategy remain active.

How many Content Writer jobs are available in Malaysia in 2026?

JobStreet showed 1,366 Content Writer search results across Malaysia in August 2026. Search-result totals fluctuate and include adjacent content positions.

Are Malaysian companies asking writers to use AI?

Yes. Current Indeed and JobStreet vacancies explicitly mention AI content tools, AI-assisted content development, AI search optimisation and AI prompting.

Why can marketers replace some writing work with AI?

Marketers already understand the product, audience and campaign objective. AI reduces drafting time, allowing the marketer to handle more of the process without passing every assignment to a writer.

What writing skills are harder for AI to replace?

Original reporting, interviews, subject expertise, editorial judgement, creative concepts, persuasive copy and strong brand voice remain more defensible than general first-draft production.

Do companies still need dedicated content writers?

Some do, particularly when writing requires specialist expertise or high editorial standards. For routine marketing content, companies now have the option of combining an existing marketer or SEO role with AI-assisted production.
